Abstract

The first invasions of the land by invertebrate forms of life took place, as far as we can guess, in the Ordovician or Silurian periods and probably continued over a long passage of time with many failures and disasters until the Carboniferous, when life may be said to have been firmly established over immense areas of the continental surface.
