It was experimentally determined that the Cosmopolitan Brown House Ant (P.megacephala) was the cause of epidemics of the cosmopolitan red scale (A.aurantii) on citrus at Letaba. The nocturnal feeding periodicity of this ant was suggested as the reason why this correlation had not previously been revealed.
