There are at present four African genera included in this subfamily: Anthrax Scopoli, Argyramoeba Schiner, Dicranoclista Bezzi and Xeramoeba Hesse. The distinguishing features of the subfamily are generally given as the shape and place of origin of R2+3 in relation to the middle cross vein r-m, the structure of the antennae which are usually close together at base and which possess a circlet of hair at apex of third segment; bare metapleurae but plumula present, the fringe of the alula and the squamae composed of hairs, not scales; and the absence of a circlet of spines on the ovipositor.
