Abstract

The status of this genus is not at all settled. Most European authors, including Bezzi in his contributions of 1911 and 1924 on the Ethiopian fauna, consider it as distinct although close to Villa. On the other hand, American authors, e.g. Painter (1933) treat Hemipenthes as no more than a subgenus of Villa (not, as in Paramonow, with Villa as a subgenus of Hemipenthes, which is manifestly incorrect). The limits of the various genera of the Exoprosopinae are ill-defined, and between Hemipenthes, Villa and Thyridanthrax in particular, annectant species occur.
