Biological, distributional and taxonomic information is presented for the entire South African fauna of Blissinae. The faunal composition is analyzed and segregated into (1) ancient and recent Cape endemics (2) South African endemics (3) tropical elements that can be subdivided into species with Oriental affinities and those restricted in South Africa to the northern and eastern Transvaal or to the eastern tropical corridor. A detailed analysis of host plant relationships is included which indicates the host plants are always monocotelydenous plants, chiefly Gramineae. Information is included on host plant specificity, adaptation to new hosts, economic importance and potential as pests of cultivated plants. Host plant data is given for 34 blissine species in nine genera and showing relationships with at least 52 plant species representing five orders, six families and 36 genera. Thirteen tribes of grasses are represented in the host plant list.
