Soft brown scale (Coccus hesperidum L.) has been known for many years in South Africa as a minor and usually rather localized pest of citrus. In certain areas where ants were particularly active, e.g. Letaba in the N. Transvaal, this scale together with red scale (Aonidiella aurantii Mask.), often became very abundant in the orchards.
