Species of the asilid genus Hyperechia Schiner, 1866 (type species Laphria xylocopiformis Walker, 1849) are known to mimic carpenter bees of the genus Xylocopa (Hymenoptera: Apidae). Hyperechia is mainly Ethiopian in its distribution, only two of the about seventeen descriptionbed species being distributed in SE Asia. The larvae are predacious on those of Xylocopa, while the adults are known to feed mainly on aculeate Hymenoptera (see Poulton, 1924) ; a specimen of H. d. bifasciata from Pretoria, has attached a note reading ""caught honey bee"" (see also Van Someren in Poulton, loco cit.).
