oa Journal of the Entomological Society of Southern Africa - The nomenclatural status of the common long tailed mealy bug (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae)

Abstract

The nomenclatural status of the common long tailed mealy bug was first discussed by Cockerell in 1899, but it has never been satisfactorily settled (Ferris, 1950). After going through the references of the earlier authors, Cockerell pointed out: There is no such thing as Dactylopius adonidum Linn. In the early editions of the ""Fauna Suecica"" Linne had a Pediculus adonidum, but finding out that it was not a Pediculus, and apparently not knowing what to do with it, he omitted it altogether from the ""Systema Naturae"", ed. x, from which our nomenclature starts.
