oa Journal of the Entomological Society of Southern Africa - The food assimilation and duration of larval instars of three saturniid forest pests

 

Abstract

In the laboratory at fluctuating temperatures of about 20�C, the larval stage of Nudaurelia cytherea clarki Geertsema lasts about 76 days, Pseudobunaea irius (F.) 62 days and Holorcerina smilax (Westw.). with four instars, 45 days and with five instars 54 days. The digestion coefficients were 22,8, 17,1 and 21,0 per cent for the three species.
