It is a problem plant mainly in the subtropical regions of South Africa where it invades both natural bush and plantations.L. camara is poisonous to stock, and by suppressing natural vegetation also reduces the carrying capacity of the veld.
Cicadellidae collected by Darwin near Cape Town during the visit of the 'Beagle', were identified as Kaapia darwini gen.et spec. nov. and Caffrolix cyclopia (Cogan) comb. nov. These and a related new species Kaapia longistylus are descriptionbed and figured.
