A causal explanation for myrmecophily in the Lycaenidae is recorded. In this study experiments were carried out to establish whether the association between ants and Iycaenid larvae is mediated at least in part by chemical signals.
The biting cycle of A. merus (Donitz) was investigated and clearly showed the presence of an endogenous rhythm. Under optimal conditions of wind, rain and temperature this cycle compares well with that shown for the A. gambiae s.l. However, wind speed, rain and possibly temperature affect the cycle.
