Differences in resistance to the larvae of B. fusca feeding in whorl tissue have been identified in certain maize genotypes, but there are no data on the effectiveness of this resistance in reducing yield loss. To determine whether first feeding in the whorl of different maize genotypes yield loss, II homozygous maize cultivars (inbred lines) were each artificially infested with approximately 20 first instar larvae. It is concluded that field selection for resistance to B. fusca should rely on leaf damage recorded after 24 days feeding and visual assessment at harvest of plant height reduction and yield.
