oa Journal of the Entomological Society of Southern Africa - On a collection of Orthoptera from North and East Africa in the South African Museum

While working in the South African Museum during 1943-4, I was shown a box containing a collection of ""foreign Orthoptera"" by Dr Hesse. These proved to be from North and East Africa, Australasia, America, Asia, and other parts of the world. It occurred to me that it might be useful to indentify the African specimens and to place a list of them on record for reference purposes. The origin of this collection appears to be a mystery. As regards the North and East Mrican material, I decided to attempt to identify the specimens and then refer to the specific labels which some of them carried. There is nothing to indicate by whom these labels were written. In all cases except one they have proved to be correct, excepting that some of the species are now placed in different genera from those to which they were assigned by the unknown determinor.
