Recent observations on vasculopathy have re-emphasised the high prevalence of risk factors including smoking, diabetes mellitus, systemic hypertension and a low ratio of mean high-density lipoprotein to total cholesterol.1 A controlled study of this ratio was carried out on 34 black South Africans and the conclusion was drawn that there is a need for community and clinical studies, especially among this ethnic group.
