Extracted from text ... Magnesium in patients with heart failure Total serum magnesium concentration is low in a significant percentage of patients who present with congestive heart failure (HF) and normal renal function. Hypomagnesaemia has been found to be associated with a reduction in survival in these patients. Excess magnesiuresis, caused by common diuretics (loop and/or thiazide- type drugs), is habitually the main causative factor of hypomagnesaemia in CHF patients. The loop diuretic furosemide increases magnesiuresis by decreasing the reabsorption of filtered magnesium at the loop of Henle and at the nephronal proximal tubule. The loop diuretic ..
