New drug therapies may, for the first time, offer patients and their physicians an opportunity to halt the seemingly inevitable progression of diabetes by targeting the correct underlying defects, according to Dr Leif Groop of Lund University, Sweden. Treatment of diabetes should start as early as possible, at 6 mmol/l fasting plasma glucose (FPG) or before. By the time the traditional levels of diabetes diagnosis are reached (7 mmol/l FPG), about 50% of patients already show signs of cardiovascular complications.
