During the past 50 years several lines of evidence converged to suggest that this could be attributed largely to the decrease in oestrogen levels that attends the postmenopausal state, and that correction of this deficiency might prevent heart disease. Postmenopausal oestrogen is the second most commonly prescribed prescription drug in the United States, and in South Africa, the current hormone replacement therapy (HRT) market has a turnover of R232 million and a growth in excess of 30%.
