Extracted from text ... In this article, the author discusses the way in which the ethos of modern medicine has shifted over the past four or five decades. The concepts 'ethos' and 'ethics' are carefully demarcated. Next, the historically notable tension between self-interest and altruism in the medical profession's selfunderstanding is discussed. The author shows how the emphasis on patient autonomy and informed consent has jeopardised certain rights that medical practitioners have customarily claimed for themselves. The influence of the views of John Locke and Thomas Sydenham on the way in which doctors thought of their rights is discussed. What particularly is argued is ..
