Cholesterol-lowering action of policosanol compares well to that of pravastatin and lovastatin In a recent review published in the American Heart Journal, 1 the authors note the comparable efficacy of policosanol to established lipid-lowering medications, pravastatin and lovastatin. In a randomised double-blind study in 68 older patients (>60 years) with LDL cholesterol levels greater than 3.4 ml and increased coronary risk, policosanol 10 mg, taken with the evening meal, achieved a 19.3% lowering of LDL cholesterol and a 14% lowering of LDL cholesterol.2 Policosanol significantly increased the levels of HDL cholesterol (18.4%) and reduced triglycerides (14%).
