Patient interest in natural options to help intervene in reducing the risks of an urbanised lifestyle is on the increase, perhaps also influenced by perceived high costs of technology-driven medicine. Phytosterols, referred to as 'the good cholesterol of plants', occur naturally, mainly as ?-sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol, and are similar in structure to cholesterol. These products act by inhibiting intestinal absorption of dietary and biliary cholesterol, a function that has been recognised by the FDA as being a permissible claim.
