Extracted from text ... 140 CARDIOVASCULAR JOURNAL OF SOUTH AFRICA Vol 16, No. 3, May/June 2005 Proof 1; 2 The South African National Burden of Disease study for the year 2000 estimated that 17% of all deaths were due to cardiovascular diseases.1 This translates into 8% of years of life lost and 6% of the disability-adjusted life years. In contrast, HIV/AIDS accounts for 29% of deaths, 39% of years of life lost and 33% of disability-adjusted life years. These estimates were derived through careful analysis of several data sources and demographic modelling, as South Africa does not yet have accurate statistics on the causes ..
