oa Cardiovascular Journal of Africa - Prevalence of hypertension among elderly blacks in the Orange Free State
A study was conducted to determine the prevalence of hypertension among elderly blacks io tbe Orange Free State. Four hundred elderly blacks aged 65 years or more were randomly selected from 10 randomly selected towns. Blood pressures were determined according to the American Heart Association's recommendations. The prevaJence of hypertension (systolic pressure 160 mmHg, diastolic> 95 mmHg) was 41,8% and 60,6% for males and females respectively. The prevalence of systolic hypertension (systolic> 160 mmHg, diastolic < 90 mmHg) was J2,6% and 13,8% respectively. The results of this study suggest that the elderly black population in South Africa is a hypertensive population.
