oa Cardiovascular Journal of Africa - Pulmonary tuberculosis in children with rheumatic carditis

Abstract

Rheumatic carditis is the commonest acquired heart lesion in children in South Africa, and tuberculosis is one of the major health problems in the Western Cape. This study determined that children with rheumatic fever have an approximate nine times increased risk of developing pulmonary tuberculosis. The reasons for this are unclear, but these findings emphasise the need for health personnel managing children with rheumatic carditis to have a high index of suspicion of pulmonary tuberculosis.
