n Child Abuse Research in South Africa - The anal medical examination of the sexually abused child : findings and their interpretation




The importance of the correct procedure and interpretation of findings in the anal medical examination of sexually abused children cannot be overemphasised. In this article a brief summary is given of the development of the anal examination, followed by findings that can be regarded as normal and signs that are indicative of sexual abuse and their interpretation. It forms a framework that should be useful in practice. Hopefully it will also help other professionals who regularly see medical reports in the course of their duties to obtain a better grasp of the type of detail that should be reflected in such a report.
