n Child Abuse Research in South Africa - The prevention and early detection of sexual abuse

Volume 1, Issue 2
  • ISSN : 1562-1383

Child sexual abuse invades the inner being of a child and can have devastating effects. If abuse can be prevented, it eliminates both the traumatic experiences of the child relating to the abuse and the professional and judicial processes which it may entail. This article indicates prevention strategies, and a prevention structure. It links prevention programmes to the process of disclosure of abuse as reported by adult survivors, in order to plan prevention more effectively. Some evaluative studies on the effectiveness of prevention programmes are also highlighted. Guidelines for the systems involved in prevention and the implementation of prevention programmes are provided.
