Abstract

This review article focuses on social and emotional contextual factors that could impact on children's memory skills. The factors reviewed may not only influence the quality of children's accounts in child sexual abuse cases, but may also influence the quantity of information remembered or verbalised. Forensic evaluators and the triers of facts, need to appreciate that the perceived competency of the child witness may be influenced by contextual factors, by social conventions, and by interview practices in forensic contexts
