Abstract

Knowledge of children's memory functioning is imperative in the forensic context where children's competency as witnesses is often questioned. In this review article, the role of memory in the competency of children as witnesses in child sexual abuse cases is critically discussed. More specifically focus is placed on age and developmental level and factors such as attention and conceptualisation, memory strategies, repeated verbal recall, reconstruction of events, type of memory, scripts and stereotypes and the influence of time are discussed.
