Abstract

This article describes a study undertaken in South Africa which attempted to determine the impact of AIDS on the family. The research investigated family dysfunction, focusing on core family functions. Real-life stories (narratives) concerning three families in the North West Province, who had lost members of their families to HIV / AIDS, are described. The article concludes by highlighting the challenges schools face to support families affected by HIV / AIDS. The study also provides recommendations and guidelines for teachers.
