This paper descriptionbes experiments carried out in the Union of South Africa during the War with the object of determining whether timber-reinforced concrete beams could be satisfactorily used as an emergency method of construction. The results are given of a series of tests for tensile strength and elastic modulus made on a number of species of locally-grown eucalypts, pines and acacias. Both clear specimens and specimens containing knots were tested; the decrease in tensile strength due to knots was found to be approximately proportional to the sectional area of the knots.
