The Railway Administration's decision to deviate and double the Natal main line between Umlaas Road and Pentrich stations, to meet the increasing rail traffic needs, necessitated the construction of five pairs of tunnels, three large viaducts, numerous smaller structures, earthworks and approximately twelve miles of double electrified railway line. This paper descriptionbes in general outline the planning of this deviation, the tender documents used for the various contracts, the subsequent construction programme, and the costs thereof. Construction commenced in December 1962 and the new line was opened to traffic in December 1965.
