The paper descriptionbed the mechanics of landslides and identified their cause. The strength properties of the stiff fissured clay at Amsterdamhoek and the weathered felspathic sandstone at Bethlehem were descriptionbed and strengths measured in small-scale tests were compared with the strength of the soil in bulk. It was concluded that both the short- and long-ter stability of slopes in stiff fissured materials is governed by the shearing resistance along fissures in the soil.
