AFRICON WAS RESPONSIBLE for the investigation, design and construction supervision of the bridge repair project as part of the rehabilitation of the only road link between the Mozambican towns of Inchope and Gorongosa. Built in 1974, the Pungue River bridge has 12 arches spanning a total length of 528 m. Severe damage was caused to this crucial transport link during the civil war in the late seventies and eighties. Explosives damaged the bridge to such an extent that two of the footings of the main arches were severely fractured and several deck elements were completely destroyed.
