The results of three different digital computer methods of analysing elastic plates in bending, namely the finite difference, finite element and equivalent grillage methods, are compared with test results for a steel plate which was centrally loaded and simply supported at four internal points. The finite difference and finite element procedures are found to give very similar results, although the finite element method might be preferred in cases with more complex boundary and support conditions. Subject to certain conditions, the equivalent grillage method is found to give excellent predictions of plate deflections and reasonable distributions of bending and twisting moments per unit width.
