In the past hundred years, the South African mining industry was responsible for much of the country's development and riches. Unfortunately, mining activities have not always been subjected to, and measured against, the strict environmental and health standards of today. The legacy of mining is with us today and evident in extensive mined-out areas, mine dumps and polluted water containments.
