Municipal solid wastes are currently receiving attention as potential minor sources of energy. Wastes can make a contribution of the overall energy situation in four ways: directly, by combustion of wastes to produce energy; indirectly, by conversion to gaseous liquid or solid fuels; by returning to the economy materials manufactured by energy intensive processes; and by providing a feedstock for the manufacture of materials normally produced from key energy resources such as oil.
