A method is presented in which the gradientofthe energy line of a river can be determined. Cross-sections of a river are used which are not necessarily of the same shape. The method was tested by using previously published data from 19 rivers. The calculated values compare well with those actually measured. This implies that a type of equilibrium flow exists in channels which have cross-sections of varying shape.
