Abstract

Although fairly new in South Africa, long welded rails have been in use for many years in other countries and experience has shown that they are a practicable proposition provided certain precautions are taken. The paper descriptionbes briefly what is Involved from the practical aspect in laying and welding rails into continuous lengths. It covers the tests that have been carried out in this country to determine the thermal stresses generated in long rails. Tests for buckling and lateral rigidity of the track are also dealt with.
