Abstract

The main purpose in mechanizing track maintenance and renewals is greater efficiency by means of doing the work more economically or to obtain a higher standard or both. This purpose Iis achieved through the use of power driven machines and ancillary equipment to eliminate or replace hand labour. A descriptionption is given of the requirements of track maintenance, the methods adopted to achieve this with mechanized gangs, the mechanized equipment being used, the erection of mechanized repair depots, and the methods adopted to determine gangers' lengths for mechanized and nonmechanized gangs with due consideration to factors such as classification of the various lines, number of trains, position of gang headquarters, standard of permanent way material, condition of formation, etc. In conclusion a brief summary is given of the economical and other Indirect advantages to be gained by mechanization of track maintenance and renewals on the South African Railways.
