n Civil Engineering = Siviele Ingenieurswese - Prospectus for a project to conserve old engineering drawings : SAICE and professional news

A few years ago, I found myself stuck in London over a weekend. With nothing else to do I went off to the Science Museum in South Kensington ostensibly to see the old beam engines. Those seen, I wandered upstairs to a whole floor dedicated to survey and drawing office equipment. I was amazed to find that here were the instruments I had worked with in the 1960s in the offices of SS&O in Balgownie House on the corner of Commissioner and Sauer Streets - an Amsler polar planimeter signed by Mr Amsler himself, a Watts open circle 20" vernier tachy and lots of other instruments all made obsolete by the computer revolution. These were the instruments that made the old engineering drawings - now all obsolete, as are the type of drawings they made.
