Abstract

Bicycling as a mode of transport has its benefits, including improved physical health, reduced traffic congestion and reduced air pollution, among other benefits. Over the last few years, the trend has been changing to prioritise pedestrians and bicycles over private car usage. Cities across the world are now removing travel lanes for cars and replacing them with lanes for public transport, bicycles and pedestrian infrastructure. In the process of providing the necessary infrastructure to support bicycling, cities have had to come up with bold and innovative ideas to overcome some of the challenges. This article describes a few of these innovative ideas at work, pertaining to bicycle infrastructure.
