The Majuba rail project is a component of the Eskom Road-to-Rail Initiative, and comprises the construction of a railway line that links the Majuba Power Station to the main coal railway hub in Ermelo, Mpumalanga. The 68 km corridor is the first large greenfield freight rail infrastructure project to be carried out in South Africa since 1986, and will be operated by state-owned logistics provider Transnet Freight Rail (TFR). The project was designed by Transnet Capital Projects.
The Mall of Africa project comprises a 131 000 m2 development at Waterfall Estate, located between Sandton and Midrand in Gauteng. At the centre of the Mall, there is a 4 300 m2 undulating free-form skylight, running 170 m in the north-south direction and spanning up to 51 m in the east-west direction. MDS Architecture generated the initial skylight design to bring light into the Mall and to create a unique feature element. Novum Structures was appointed as the design-build specialist subcontractor for the design and installation of this skylight. Aurecon designed the perimeter concrete support structure, and the main contractor was a joint venture between WBHO and Group 5.
From a geotechnical perspective, the complete overhaul of the Village Walk site in Sandton, Johannesburg, has been sufficiently challenging that this has been one of the most incredible projects I have ever worked on. Fontein Street Bridge B247A is located at kilometre 12.599 on the N4-4 between Emalahleni and Nelspruit. The bridge consists of a main span and two jack spans - the spans are 10.73 m, 17.51 m and 10.73 m, giving a total length of 38.97 m. The reinforced concrete deck is supported at two abutments and at two piers. The deck is 900 mm deep, has a span-to-depth ratio of 19.5, and contains fifteen voids 600 mm in diameter.
