Water is the lifeblood of any country, but to water-short South Africa it is of critical importance. The international agreement on the Lesotho Highlands Water Project signed in October lays the basis for the biggest water project ever to be tackled in Southern Africa. It will stabilize the water supply to the Republic's most important economic region and will also be of tremendous importance to the tiny Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho.
A statistical analysis of South African wind speed data is presented. This investigation includes the estimation of annual maximum hourly mean wind speeds and gust speeds and additional informatlon required for specialized design applications.
