The commissioning on schedule of the Kariba hydro-electric scheme in Rhodesia, designed for over-year storage and almost complete regulation of the river at this point, marks the conclusion of the first stage towards eventual full utilization of the hydro-potential of the whole Zambesi system of tributaries. This paper deals with some general aspects relating to civil engineering construction, including temporary and ancillary works. An account is given of the methods of water control during construction and of concrete production for the dam and underground works. Brief descriptionptions supported by statistics are given concerning the organization and layout of plant and services, design criteria including architectural treatment, control of materials, accommodation and labour with reference to environment and health.
