oa Civil Engineering = Siviele Ingenieurswese - Pore pressures in rolled fill earth dams

In the stability analysis of earth dams and embankments by the well known method of 'slices,' the general practice up to date has been to neglect the lateral neutral pressures on the sides of the 'slices' and to consider only the uplift pressure normal to the base of the 'slices.' This omission is shown from a consideration of the force polygon to be equivalent to unwittingly either under or over estimating the effect of the seepage force of the water flowing through the , slices' and not, as usually assumed, to merely leaving out of the calculations a lateral neutral stress with no effect on their stability.
