The paper comprises notes based on personal practical experience and is not a treatise. After some comments on survey and location, considerations affecting the design of a pipeline are discussed including discharge formulae, the most economical diameter of a pumping main, pipe thickness, requirements of a perfect joint and the extent to which different types of joint meet these requirements, and protective coatings. A few notes are given on inspection and testing of pipes. Different types of valves, their function, suitability and location in a pipeline are considered; special features that may be required in the design of valves and test procedure are outlined. Brief notes on pipeline structures are followed by notes on pipeline construction including trench excavation, handling of pipes, plant required and pipe laying technique. The paper concludes with a few notes on pipeline maintenance and electrolysis.
