The subject of this paper is a ten-million gallon reinforced concrete reservoir, which was designed and constructed in accordance with the Institution of Civil Engineers' Code of Practice for the design and construction of reinforced concrete structures for the storage of liquids. Trouble had been experienced with cracking of large reinforced concrete reservoirs built during the preceding few years in Johannesburg. The aim in the design of the Doornkop reservoir was primarily to inhibit cracking and to ensure a high degree of water-tightness.
