The doubling of the main railway line in Natal between Pietermaritzburg and Ladysmith included the construction of twin tunnels, 3 miles long, through the escarpment at Hilton Road, near Pietermaritzburg. This paper descriptionbes the various methods used for the excavation of the tunnels and how the difficulties encountered were overcome. The methods used for constructing the concrete lining are also dealt with. The tunnels were opened to traffic on March 28, 1960.
