Systematic descriptionption of the soils in a soil profile provides an important basis for the first assessment of the engineering properties of the soil. Attention is drawn to workable procedures for such descriptionptions and to the engineering consequences of the various terms used. A standard set of graphical symbols for the various soil types is given and a typical example of a soil profile is illustrated.
