oa Civil Engineering = Siviele Ingenieurswese - A simplified colour chart for soil identification

Abstract

The need for a simple standard means of measuring and descriptionbing soil colours in the field is discussed. Previous work on the problem of soil colour measurement is descriptionbed and the essential features of a simplified colour chart are then listed. A colour disc 21 in. in diameter is presented. This chart covers the whole range of colours likely to be encountered by the foundation engineer. The terms used to descriptionbe the colours are simple and the engineer should have little difficulty in mastering them. Though primarily intended for use as a rough colour indicator the chart is arranged so that intermediate colours may be named and identified. An important feature of the chart is that the colour nomenclature is consistent with widely accepted standards.
