On the evening of January 29, 1958, Table Bay Harbour suffered the worst disaster of its history when the greater part of the huge pre-cooling installation was destroyed by fire. The extent of the damage, based on its replacement value, was estimated at R3-million. This paper deals with the events following on the fire, the clearing of the wreckage, the provision of temporary facilities, the speeding up and extension of the facilities already planned and the re-construction of the buildings destroyed by the fire.
